Bits & Drills

The right drill bit is essential. There are many options, but which bit is right for wood, tiles, concrete, and other materials? It's important to know that each material has different properties, which is why a different drill bit is crucial for each type of material. WALTER offers the perfect bit for every application – and at the best price!

Find drill bits at WALTER

Whether stone, concrete, tiles, or wood – every building material requires a different drill bit. Luckily, there's a suitable drill bit for every type of material.

Which drill bit is suitable for concrete and stone?

When using a concrete or stone drill bit, it is important to carefully examine the composition of the object to be drilled. For example, the top layer should be checked.
The wall needs to be drilled. If red dust (brick wall) or white dust (limestone wall) appears, a masonry drill bit is best. If gray dust trickles out of the hole, you would usually use a concrete drill bit.

Which drill bit is suitable for wood?

Wood is relatively easy to work with compared to other, harder materials; however, a few things should be kept in mind to achieve the desired results. When working with wood, only wood drill bits with a centering tip should be used. A twist drill bit can be used for small holes. For deep holes from 8–10 mm, an auger bit is recommended, and for creating blind holes or precisely drilling out knots, a Forstner bit is best. Another tip: Always clamp the wood securely and drill in the direction of the grain whenever possible.

Which drill bit is suitable for tiles?

Drilling into tiles requires particular skill, as tiles can easily crack or chip. The tile's scratch hardness is crucial for choosing the right drill bit. A tile and glass drill bit is suitable for tiles with a scratch hardness of up to 3. Important: Always switch off the impact or hammer function before drilling – otherwise, the tile could be damaged or break.

Which drill bit is suitable for metal?

For drilling in metal, it is recommended to use an HSS drill bit (HSS = High Speed Steel). These have a point angle of 118 degrees, whereas harder metals like stainless steel require a point angle of 135 degrees. Since metal, unlike wood, does not tolerate crooked drilling, it is advisable to use a pillar drill instead of a conventional drill. This ensures precise 90-degree holes. Furthermore, drilling in metal requires significantly fewer revolutions per minute than drilling in wood.

Important safety notice for all drilling operations:

Don't forget your safety glasses! Especially when drilling into metal or concrete, you should protect your eyes from flying splinters.
