Carbon brushes, motor brushes & grinding brushes from WALTER

No matter what you call them – they all mean the same thing. At WALTER you'll find a selection of different sets for various applications.

What are carbon brushes?

Carbon brushes (also called grinding carbon or motor brushes) are sliding contacts, usually made of graphite or metal-enriched graphite. They establish the electrical contact with the commutator or slip rings of the rotating part in a motor or generator.

Where and when is carbon grinding used?

Carbon brushes are used in many AC appliances in the home and workshop. As they are a consumable part, they wear out after a certain number of revolutions and must be replaced. They are held in a specific holder inside the housing. The carbon brushes should have a minimum thickness of 5 mm – however, replacing them before this point can prevent damage!

Replacing carbon brushes: How are they changed?

  1. Unscrew the device.
  2. After that, the carbon brushes (usually two) should already stand out directly as a black block in the housing.
  3. The carbon brushes are held in their holder by a spring to ensure they are always advanced. For safety reasons, this spring is usually locked in place. Carefully release it using a small flat-head screwdriver.
  4. Then you can insert the new carbon brushes in the same position as you removed the old ones and close the device again. When the new ones are in place, you should usually hear the spring click into place – this way you can be sure they are securely seated.
