What is right for me?
Heating with a gas radiant heater or gas heater
Are you unsure whether you need a gas patio heater or a gas heater for your next barbecue, marquee event, or workshop? We'll show you the advantages of both categories to help you decide.
Where can I use radiant heaters?
Ideal for outdoor use and in tents
Patio heaters and space heaters are well-known and extremely popular. These freestanding heaters are primarily used on patios or in tents. A pleasant warmth spreads within seconds of being switched on. Caution: Gas-powered patio heaters and space heaters produce exhaust fumes during combustion. Therefore, only use them outdoors or in well-ventilated tents!

Gas-powered radiant heaters
...can be attached to a standard gas cylinder from a hardware store. The rising fuel is ignited by the piezo igniter. The radiant element is heated by the gas flame, producing radiant heat that is emitted into the surrounding area. The heating direction is individually adjustable. The heat can be reflected both upwards and downwards.

Gas heaters
...are usually operated with propane-butane gas mixtures or pure propane. Cold air is drawn in through the turbine, heated inside the unit, and then expelled to the outside by a fan. With flame temperatures of up to 1000°C, these compact gas heaters warm the surrounding area quickly and efficiently.
Warms ambient air
Advantages of a gas patio heater
- Radiant heat is generated by the radiating element.
- It heats the surrounding air (not the solid objects).
- Wind has no influence on the effect
- Provides heat immediately after ignition.
For larger rooms & halls

Three tips for using heating elements
Caution: Gas heaters and gas cannons produce exhaust fumes during combustion. Therefore, only use them outdoors or in well-ventilated tents!

Maintain a safe distance
Whether gas or electric – any heating appliance can also heat surrounding objects and surfaces, such as walls, ceilings, or furniture. Therefore, always maintain a sufficient safety distance from heat-sensitive materials.

Insulate the subfloor – this keeps the heat in.
Is your garden party taking place in a tent and possibly lasting until the early hours? With simple insulation made of a tarpaulin and straw, you can ensure a comfortably warm atmosphere even during the cooler hours. The straw also absorbs moisture – a real advantage, especially on snowy days!

Warning: Fire hazard
Both gas-powered patio heaters and gas-powered space heaters pose a fire hazard if they tip over. Therefore, always ensure that the heaters and space heaters are placed on a stable surface.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a gas patio heater work?
- Gas is ignited (with piezo ignition)
- The radiating element is heated by the gas flame.
- This generates radiant heat, which is then reflected
How does a gas-fired heater work?
- Air is drawn in.
- The drawn-in air is heated.
- Warm air is distributed throughout the room by fans.
What is a piezo ignition?
- Igniting the gas flame at the touch of a button
- Safe start of the spotlight in windy conditions
- No lighter needed anymore
What is the gas consumption?
Gas consumption depends on the heating level and the power output of the gas heater. You can find the specific gas consumption for each item under "Technical Data" in the WALTER online shop. Suitable butane or propane gas cylinders are available at any well-stocked hardware store.
Where can I buy gas cylinders for my patio heater?
Since gas cylinders are legally classified as hazardous goods and require special storage, they are not available in the WALTER online shop. Suitable butane or propane cylinders are available at any well-stocked building supply store.
Who can repair my broken gas heater?
Gas heating repairs should only be carried out by qualified personnel. For WALTER products and all products distributed by WALTER, please feel free to contact our customer service .
How hot does a gas patio heater get?
Depending on the model and size, a gas patio heater or gas-powered heater can reach an internal temperature of between 100°C and 900°C. For this reason, a safety distance of at least 1 meter must always be maintained. Furthermore, the devices must be set up out of the reach of children.
Can I use a gas heater indoors?
Burning gas produces exhaust fumes. These fumes cannot escape in enclosed spaces, which is why indoor use is only recommended to a limited extent. A gas-powered heater, for example, can certainly be used in a large marquee or sports hall, as there is ample air circulation.
