We're building "plastic-eating fish"!

In Senegal, plastic waste disposal is a major problem. Schoolyards are often littered with plastic waste. To address this issue, TOOLS FOR LIFE has devised a waste collection project.

So-called "plastic-eating fishers" are being installed in schoolyards. These metal "fish" are designed to playfully encourage children to dispose of plastic waste properly. As part of the installation of the plastic-eating fishers, there will be a training session on recycling.
The plastic-eating fish are made by a local metalworker. The fish are then purchased by Tools for Life and placed in schools.

This is where Senegalese entrepreneur Kareu comes in. Kareu will buy the collected plastic waste from the schools. The schools can then use the money to improve their operations (new teaching materials, etc.). Kareu processes the plastic waste into granules. In his small business, he then processes these granules into hoses for drip irrigation systems and into pipes. These hoses and pipes are also used in TOOLS FOR LIFE projects, for example in Ngollar and Pallo.
